2021.10.16 05:51 ubikismusic Ahrelevant-Vaush debate is stupid as fuck

I don't know how Destiny still has nerves to watch these kinds of stupid debates. The whole argument could be boiled down to couple of sentences: 1. If you are a socialist, you should support socialist causes. 2. Socialists should encourage each other to pursue socialist practices on which they try to educate others. 3. If you're saying you're a socialist, but you aren't doing anything to support things you believe in, you're a crappy socialist. Educating people is great, but you, as a person suck, because you just like to talk about these things and not do anything irl. 4. Socialists SHOULD be held to a higher moral standard by socialists, than non-Socialists. Since, socialists are outspoken supporters of progressive policies, like healthcare and etc. and they ally themselves with progressives and liberals, non-Socialists who fight for the same stuff, should have higher standards for Socialists, than say conservatives. 5. Same goes for any ideology. If you're a nazi and you don't do anything to help the Nazi cause, you're a crappy NAZI from the perspective of other nazis. Or if you say you're marxist-leninist and a revolutionary, you gotta do something for the revolution, otherwise you're a crappy revolutionary, both practically and morally from POV of other revolutionaries.
I know I'm preaching to the choir but holy shit. Vaush could say, yeah that's true, but maybe we should just talk to Hasan in a more encouraging way and oh by the way, when it comes to social issues that liberals and socialists are both trying to work on, Socialists are always held to a higher standard (whether or not that's true) and that sucks. That's it.

2021.10.16 05:51 Rick_the_Intern Sat Cartooz: Do you remember any of these Saturday Morning Cartoons this station is playing?

[Promotional poster of “Sat Cartooz” I found online.]
It had taken six years of climbing ladders and being kicked back down every rung, recurringly, before I realized that the corporate world had taken me hostage. And I had Stockholm syndrome for it. Well, maybe it wasn’t exactly the same as Stockholm syndrome, but the love I had for my captor despite everything was similar. It was a love deeper and profounder than the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed attraction I’d had when first stumbling out of college and into their offices. It was much stronger, even, than when during interviews I’d gotten those initial hints of promotions and other ladder climbing that might lie in the future. After getting the job, that bond was somehow made profounder and deeper despite the boot to the face that came again and again, kicking me back down every rung every time without fail into my dark hole. Maybe the bond was better for it, and maybe, in the end, that’s why kicking corporate lackeys like myself down ladders was done.
So when I walked into my living room one Saturday morning to find my TV already on and cartoons playing, I canceled my Saturday morning workout, journaling, and meditation routine I usually did at the company’s behest to check off their “self-improvement during off time” boxes. I cancelled all that shit to just slump down on my couch and watch those cartoons.
I didn’t question then how it came to be that my TV was on. Maybe I’d left it on by accident the previous night and didn’t remember. Sometimes on Friday nights or whenever the work week “ends” we get so tired that everything’s a blur.
That first Saturday that would become two and then three and then four and more Saturdays, I sat back and watched the weirdness unfold in front of me.
These were cartoons that seemed familiar, and maybe you can help me by confirming or denying whether you’ve heard of some of them before. As I watched them, even from the beginning, I wondered if they were all—every single one of them—series that had been taken off the air because of their content. They smacked more of 90s kids cartoons to me, when things were a bit more . . . experimental. Yet I couldn’t help but think they weren’t meant for kids.
Of course, by the second Saturday I knew that the TV was turning on by itself, but I let it all run its course in its earliest stages.
If someone had hacked into my TV, I figured they could have their fun while I was intrigued. My bank and other relevant accounts had been, as far as I could tell, untampered with.
My TV did not really access stations because I did not have cable, only streaming services, and as far as I could tell this “station,” if could be called that, existed in some kind of twilight between the device that was my TV and the streaming services that I had. I could never find it. It would just pop on Saturdays from 8 AM- 12 PM. I tried turning it off. The power would come back on and run until noon before shutting itself down. I could not access anything else on my TV but that until it was finished.
So, as I said, I let it unfold. At least at first.
Following are the initial list of programs on that Saturday morning cartoon station.
[maybe you know some of them]:
8:00 AM – 8:30 AM Leo and Lex on Safari
To me, this was the earliest, most innocent, but ultimately most disturbing of the programs.
It is about two lions who are best friends. Leo is tall, skinny, and sociable. Lex is about average height and build (as far as cartoon lions walking on their hind legs go) and usually has less to say. Leo has a safari hat and binoculars, while Lex has sunglasses and a magnifying glass. They go on “knowledge safaris” in which they find and highlight living things in their savanna environment, often meeting other animal characters and “helping” them along the way. All of that might seem innocent enough, but by the end of the first episode it is strongly hinted that Leo and Lex will inevitably eat many of the animals that they interact with.
By the second episode, Leo’s and Lex’s nose hairs and ear hairs start making their appearances. Leo has these overly long nose hairs, and Lex has similar ear hairs that peep out to talk to the viewer and only the viewer, breaking the fourth wall without the characters in the show being aware. While everything else stops, these nose and ear hairs provide the viewer with embarrassing knowledge about our titular characters, from details of their bowel movements to less than flattering thoughts one character has towards the other. “I bring tidings from Lex’s brain!” the ear hairs like to say in unison, or “I bring tidings from Leo’s brain!” the nose hairs like to say. They emerge covered in glops that are closer to brain matter than earwax and snot.
But this was just the beginning of what began happening across episodes. Gradually, when Leo would joke about attacking and eating humans, it would become less tongue-in-cheek and more matter-of-fact. Across episodes, Lex’s eyes become more and more red when he removes his shades to use his magnifying glass, while his speech becomes more slurred. An arc develops that makes it abundantly clear that they had gotten their safari hat, binoculars, sunglasses, and magnifying glass, as well as their personalities, from humans that they’d met on safari. These were humans they had eaten. At one point well after the fourth episode, the fourth Saturday for me, they make a statue from animal dung and begin to worship it. The statue looks like a man with a sickle riding on a boat made of skeletons. I’m not sure whether the skeletons were supposed to be sculpted or made of actual bones, but Lex and Leo begin chanting the words Saturnus a mari over and over again. They’re laughing the whole time, as if it’s meant to be a joke.
[Here I’ll give shorter descriptions of the programs that stood out less but were not much less disturbing to me.]
8:30 AM – 9:00 AM Obscure Sleuths
It’s about a group of young paranormal investigators. They go into a haunted house full of objects that are harvested from people’s memories. Every episode is a different floor with traps and a puzzle. Except as it goes further in, hints are dropped that the Obscure Sleuths are all dead, having never passed the first floor’s puzzle to begin with. The puzzles and traps become increasingly problematic as it seems that what the Obscure Sleuths are really trying to do is sabotage those who come after them.
9:00 AM – 9:30 AM Cone Snail Man
This program follows the crime fighting escapades of a superhero who likes to boast that his power and name are based on one of the most dangerous animals in the world. He declines to use his power, and he stinks at hand-to-hand combat and crime solving. Supervillains and those he tries to save alike laugh at him. Oftener than not, the day is saved due to some blunder by the supervillain, intervention by other superheroes, or help from those he’s attempting to save. The episodes build until Cone Snail Man snaps one day, literally, and a snail emerges from the shell of his body to begin a spree of paralyzing and killing criminals with toxins. As the episodes go on, Cone Snail Man’s shell becomes less human and the snail inside becomes more monstrous.
9:30 AM – 10:00 AM Golden Heroes Out of Time
To finish off the “super-power hour”—this show involves a team of time traveling superheroes. Each of their powers relates to time in some way. They mean well, and in the beginning their adventures are like those of wholesome gods, but as they prevent crimes in the past and future through nonviolent means as well as rescue cats from trees and the like, the butterfly effect (or numerous butterfly effects) come more and more into play. This results in horrors that arise insidiously from meddling with time, until their intrepid leader, Captain Freeze Time, begins to lose her grip on sanity. She starts to unfreeze portions of time that were never meant to be ticking. This leads to yet further complications as the characters lose sight of their home time and whether it even existed to begin with.
10:00 AM – 10:30 AM The Gnomes of Messis
It concerns the goings on of tiny gnomes in the town of Messis. All would be well in this show with its magical adventures and its wholesome characters if it weren’t for the slow zoom occurring across episodes. This zoom gradually uncovers just how tiny these gnomes are and just how much their homes resemble parts of a human body.
10:30 – 11:00 AM Madame Veritas and Her Traveling Circus
Madame Veritas showcases her animals and their talents around the world. The further we get into this show, however, the more the cruel living conditions and training of these animals is shown. Some of these talking animals begin scheming revenge. As they do so, it becomes clearer that Madame Veritas is not the one pulling the strings, literally. The circus begins to become more of a puppet show, still animated but in a different style.
11:00 AM – 11:30 AM Serpent Saints from Mars
Six snake-like aliens beneath the surface of Mars come to Earth to defend it from a demonic invasion. Armed with weapons, magic, and wisecracks, these characters become increasingly violent—episode by episode—until the show steps into the realm of all out gore.
11:30 AM – 12:00 PM Percy’s Platoon
This one’s a bit like a knockoff G.I. Joe, but it’s ever more laced with real horrors of the Vietnam War.

Maybe you’ve noticed a pattern. I know I have. The first episodes of each of these programs began innocently enough, but episode by episode they would get worse, until they were just about unwatchable. For myself, I was becoming increasingly concerned by the fourth and fifth Saturday that it would just keep on getting more disturbing and that there’d be no wall to it.
I began to have nightmares of myself animated.
As I was searching around for a name and number to a station that was then nameless to me, I got a call from an unlisted number.
“Are you enjoying your free trial of Sat Cartooz?” a strange voice on the other end said. I could not tell if it was synthesized or real.
“I never asked for it,” I said. “How are you controlling my TV?”
“Did you know about our premium package?”
“I don’t want your premium package. I want it to stop.”
“Are you sure about that?”
I paused.
“Yes, I’m sure.”
“You don’t sound sure.”
“If you don’t stop tampering with my TV,” I said, “I’ll let the police know.”
“Oh, you sound unhappy. Sir, let me try to fix that. I’m seeing that I can give you a free trial of our premium package. That comes with an additional three channels and a year’s subscription to Hoot and Holler Magazine.”
“The fuck is Hoot and Holler Magazine?” I said. “Just cancel the free trial.”
“Sir, let me get you on the phone with one of our quality support agents.”
I hung up.
Now, if you’re reading this, there’s something you might already have been wondering. It’s something I had been avoiding. Why not just unplug the TV? Easy fix, right?
I did not want to think about that, the reason being that if I did unplug the TV and that if the Sat Cartooz station still came on, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to take it. It might drive me absolutely bonkers.
Nonetheless, unplug it I did. What other option was there? Sure, I could’ve called the cops like I said I might do, but something kept me from it. I didn’t know what at first, but I would come to know later.
When I unplugged my TV, the Sat Cartooz station did indeed stop. No more Saturday morning cartoons for the following two Saturdays.
At first, I was relieved.
After the first Saturday of being without, however, there grew a gnawing from somewhere within, like a new urge along with hunger or thirst.
On the topic of hunger and thirst, I found it more difficult to keep things down. My throat would actually clamp up from the sight of water. It’s like my body was against me.
I was fired from work due to lateness and lack of focus. All that “woe is me” melodrama earlier in this post about climbing ladders and being booted down to rise again eager for the rungs, all that—like the entirety of my corporate career—was for naught.
After the second Saturday morning of being without those cartoons, I succumbed.
I actually plugged in the TV that Friday night and sat in front of the TV for many hours, staring at the blank screen. A couple of hours after dawn’s light slithered in through the windows and the birds were atwitter outside, the familiar theme song of Leo and Lex on Safari began to play.
My mouth watered. My lips moved of their own accord and sounds poured out. I realized that I was drooling. And that I was singing along. I rose to get a bowl of cereal, hungry for the first time in what seemed ages.
I sat back down on the couch with tears in my eyes, munching through cereal that became increasingly salty as I knew my Saturday morning cartoons would increasingly reach into new depths. I was pleased, but at the same time more afraid than ever.
I was even more pleased and terrified to find that there was a new show in the lineup.
